Summer isn't all sweetness and light. Beneath the charm of Ohio's sunshiny days, ice cream trucks, bare feet, and barbecues lurks the ever-present potential for all manner of mishaps. Yep, accidents happen in the summertime, too, and lots of them. While this shouldn't stop you from enjoying plenty of fun and relaxation once school's out (after all, that's what summer is all about), it should inspire you to take some preventative measures, as well as make sure your body, home, and car are all protected by the right insurance policies.

Insurance affects-and protects-virtually all the most fundamental parts of our lives here in Ohio: home, health, transportation, and even work. Most of us are obligated to earn a living in some way, and, for some of us, work-related matters can lead to some unusual insurance policies and claims. Sure, if you're a professional musician in an orchestra, you might want to insure your bassoon, but in what circumstances would you ever need to insure your behind?

Chances are if you carry any sort of insurance policy in Ohio, you are somewhat familiar with the concept of exclusions. An exclusion is, in layman's terms, simply something that an insurance policy doesn't cover; it is literally excluded from protection by the policy. Of course, life is so much easier when everything is included in one tidy package, but since this is rarely the case, it's important to be aware of your insurance policies' exclusions.

Whether it's a leisurely, romantic drive down a country road, a fun-filled family vacation, or a raucous road trip across the country with friends, summer is prime time for excursions in the car. With the windows down, the music on, and the right company (or perhaps no company at all) a nice drive can be both fun and relaxing.

The forest is full of life, and dwelling close to one means you have the privilege of living among all kinds of animals, plants, and trees-not to mention the chance to savor a degree of peace and quiet not available to those who set up house in the city. Living near a forest also has its hazards, however, and chief among them is the potential for a forest fire.

For better or for worse, our world is full of cars: big ones, little ones, electric ones, ancient ones, and fresh-from-the-factory models with paint so shiny you can see your face in them. Needless to say, with so much variety on the roads in Ohio, not all cars are created equal. Consequently, the cost to insure a 1973 Volkswagen Superbeetle will be considerably different than that to insure a 2012 Mercedes Benz.

Is there any better place to spend a sunny summer day than on the water? Ohio boat lovers would certainly say no. Whether you favor the zippy momentum of a power boat, the serenity of sailing, or even the exhilarating freedom of a jet ski, there's a refreshing quality to water-centered recreation that ensures its perennial popularity. On the water, one's worries seem to quite literally float away...until something goes amiss, and you think, "Uh-oh, am I properly insured?"

If you're a business owner in Ohio, you may have employees who take company laptops and smartphones with them during their summer travels. This is wonderfully convenient because it allows employees to stay in touch and work while they are in distant locales. It is also risky, however, because chances are those laptops and smartphones contain important customer and business records-data that should never land in the wrong hands.

Times have changed substantially since the dog-eat-dog days of fire marks-distinctive plaques fashioned of lead or copper that home and business owners displayed on their property to indicate that it was insured against a fire. In the 18th and 19th centuries, fire insurance providers gave these plaques to policyholders who paid in advance for their protection. If a home or business caught fire, the fire insurance provider (who also ran the fire brigade!) would look for that all-important fire mark before going to the trouble of putting out the flames. If there was no fire mark to be found, they would turn around and leave, letting the building burn.
